GM Brynell wins 1.Malta-Open

120 players from 22 nations took part at the first open. With support of Malta Touristic Agency and Cheverny International 7 grandmasters and 13 IM came to the island south of Sizily.

Players from the north of europe were especially attracted by 20 degree and many hours of sunlight. Maltese culture and history could be explored during the day, 5 p.m. the games began. Daniel Lam from Hong Kong, Torres und Quinteros from Venezuela have traveled a long distance to play this tournament.

In round 7 GM Brynell has had the lead but lost his game against GM Burmakin. The next day GM Epishin beat the new #1 Burmakin. Now 5 GMs (Teske, Epishin, Brynell, Rausis and Heberla) had have 5.5 pts. In the last round Brynell got the downfloat and finally was the winner.

The mediterranian island of Malta has a long history and many ruins and buildings are attracting visitors from all over the world as well as it's beauty of nature. In Nov 2011 ChessOrg and Clarence Psaila coorganized a strong chess tournament here for the first time.

Next year the 2.Malta-Open will be 18 to 25 Nov 2012
